1979-1984 Studies and graduation in history and German philology at the Johannes-Gutenberg-University in Mainz

July 1988 Doctorate (Dr. phil.) in Mainz with a thesis on the cathedral chapter of Mainz in the late middle ages (“Das Mainzer Domkapitel im späten Mittelalter”)

1989-1991 Training for higher archive services in the German Federal Archives (Bundesarchiv) and the Archive School of Marburg

1991-2006 Head of several sections of the Federal Archives in Koblenz and Berlin

2006-2011 Head of the department Federal Republic of Germany (Abteilung B – Bundesrepublik Deutschland)
