Digitised Records

Direct access to the Federal Archives' files presented online.

General information

The Federal Archives is continuously working on the digitisation and online presentation of its written records, pictures and films.

Currently, there are 266,000 files with almost 54 million images available online (as of June 2023).

Our Digital Picture Archive contains more than 279,000 digitised photos. Digitised films from the First World War and the Weimar Republic are also available in our Digital Reading Room.

Given the large number of files stored within the Federal Archives (more than 530 km), it is clear that only a fraction of the total holdings will become accessible in digitised form within the next few years. Regarding more recent personal documents, legal provisions may also hinder their online presentation.

Below you will find an overview (from December 2020) of the Federal Archives’ holdings that have been digitised completely or in part (at least 10 files). All unrestricted digitised files can be found via our invenio research tool.

You can search our digitised picture holdings and order images and posters in the Digital Picture Archive. In the long term, the Digital Reading Room will become a comprehensive portal for researching and using archive material from the Federal Archives. It currently functions as a research and presentation platform for the Federal Archives’ film holdings.

Please note: After opening a link to a collection on invenio, please select the field “Nur mit Digitalisat anzeigen” to display digitized archive material only.

    Digitisation of Stasi records

The Stasi Records Archive has been digitizing selected parts of its holdings for a number of years with the aim of securing the content in the long term and making it more easily accessible. This requires a variety of devices to make the many formats of the storage media readable.
