Whoever wanted to think „differently“ in East Germany, whoever wanted to live freely was easily seen as a danger to society in the eyes of the Socialist party SED. Legislation and jurisprudence became tools of those in power. Those subjects of the state’s suspicion became encased by a network of surveillance and denunciation.

The main focus of this booklet with numerous photos and documents are the structure, methods and effects of the Ministry for State Security of East Germany. It gives insights into the world of those responsible for repression as well as those subjected to their methods, and it also tells the stories of people who dared to resist.
